On way to prison, T.I. scores 3rd straight No. 1 with 'Paper Trail'

The artist with the No. 1 album in the country is going to prison in a few months.

Billboard confirmed Wednesday that rapper T.I. , scheduled in a few months to begin serving a one-year prison term for gun possession, has scored his third straight chart-topper. The Atlanta rapper's sixth album, "Paper Trail" (Grand Hustle/Atlantic) , sold 568,000 copies in the last week. He also has the nation's No. 1 single, "Live Your Life."

It's the latest high in a year, and a career, that has also seen plenty of lows. T.I. , born Clifford Harris Jr. 28 years ago in Atlanta, was a drug dealer who transformed himself into a best-selling rapper and movie star. But a personal assistant was shot to death in a 2006 gunfight and last year T.I. was arrested for buying machine guns and silencers. After paying a $100,000 fine and doing community service, he will begin serving a one-year term in 2009.

All of which has been prime fodder for his career as one of the best-selling rappers ever to emerge from Atlanta and the "Dirty South" of ghetto misadventure. Much of "Paper Trail" was recorded under unique circumstances: while its maker was under house arrest awaiting trial.

With its cocky, drawling celebrations of his prowess as an indestructible anti-hero, "Paper Trail" is a far more commercial work than his more introspective 2007 release, "T.I. vs. T.I.P." But it also addresses --- and admittedly exploits --- his real-life legal troubles.

Rihanna Remains #1 on Billboard Chart

Jonathan Cohen, N.Y.
Rihanna begins a second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Disturbia," but barely fended off the best chart debut in more than 18 months, in the form of David Archuleta's "Crush." The track sold 166,000 downloads in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and opens at No. 2.

The last song to open so high was Fall Out Boy's "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race" in late January 2007. "Crush" also scores the best opening by an "American Idol" finalist with a song not performed on the show.

Chris Brown's "Forever" slips 2-3 on the Hot 100, with Katy Perry's "I Kissed a Girl" down 3-4 and Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" trading places with M.I.A.'s "Paper Planes" at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Kardinal Offishall's "Dangerous" featuring Akon remains at No. 7.

Rihanna's "Take a Bow" drops 4-8, while Ne-Yo's "Closer" inches up 10-9. Taylor Swift lands at No. 10 with "Change," one of five songs to debut this week from AT&T's "Team USA Soundtrack." The cut sold more than 131,000 downloads.

Kenny Chesney scores his first top 50 debut on the Hot 100 with "Everybody Wants To Go To Heaven" at No. 41. The lead single from his fall album, "Lucky Old Sun," sold 30,000 downloads and also rises 15-13 on Hot Country Songs.

Opening at No. 65 this week on the Hot 100 is Hit Masters' cover of Kid Rock's "All Summer Long," thanks to download sales of 37,000. Kid Rock's original version is not available digitally but due to increasing airplay jumps 28-25 this week.

Rihanna's "Take a Bow" soars 3-1 on Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Song, unseating Lil Wayne's "A Milli" after one week on top. Brandy has the top debut at No. 70 with "Right Here (Departed)," the first single from "Human," her Epic debut, due Nov. 11.

Taylor Swift's "Should've Said No" is in a second week at No. 1 on Hot Country Songs, while Coldplay's "Viva La Vida" jumps 2-1 on the Modern Rock chart, the band's first No. 1 hit there. Shinedown is No. 1 for a second week on Mainstream Rock with "Devour."
